FOURTY TO FIVE 40-2-5Outrageous Music Makers in Penticton May 08 GOOD MORNING FROM CRAPTASKTIC STUDIOS!! As our fans know, we jam on Mon, Wed, and Saturdays. Interesting, sometimes how things just kind of fall into place with things. Smackhammer can be random at the best of times, and he gets strange stomach flus and viruses, and misses jam sometimes. Well yesterday wasnt no exception - and so we had a fill in guitarist sit in the studio last night. A friend from Apex in the years gone by named Kyle, and he stated that he hadn't picked up an axe in 10 months. Well for not being practiced up, he picked up to the tracks very, very quickly, and the dynamic sound that he brings is a very good step in the right direction that we want to take. Welcome aboard, Kyle, as lead guitar.
Deuce has been workin his ass of getting all of the newest live studio tracks up on the sites, and getting pics and things out there.. Heres the rundown for you all that want to listen to us:

Del Deuceman Thanks for all those cool kids who know what rock and roll is all about! March 27 Some Days Just Start GOOD!!!I have been suffering for more than 2 weeks now - my left shoulder is totally messed, but I trudge along - playing my heart out and always going hard. I get ready to move into the studio, and out of a place that has a lot of history. All in all I am glad to be leaving, and starting new- things are alright - at least Im losing a shitty landlord!! Im glad that the Canucks made it into the playoffs!!! what a great game, and Im hoping that with the 6 points I got tonight - that I spring into 2nd for my hockey pool - such a close race to say the least!! I had such an awesome day today - it started with getting up late, and having a coffay at moms - gettin to the bus stop = and running into a nice friend. That made my day smooth as butter. Much love! March 15 FOURTY TO FIVE - TOUR SUMMER 2007 TENTATIVE!!In the last week, I have had a whirlwind of everything thrown at me!! Infreakincredible!! Went to the Megaeth/ Heaven And Hell concert, met up with my best friend in the world Willis, and proceeded to get drunk and negotiate a tentative deal with Masters Of The Universe producer Death Wish, and in between everything, the wildest collection of adventures all over the place!! Partying the night before my departure at 6 am Saturday, I decided to have a nap at 5 am - not a good thing when the alcohol was flowin like booze. So I missed my first ride with Moose. I wake up in the twilight zone of having an hour removed from my day, and since I slept in, I missed the first 2 busses that would have brought me safely in time for the whole show. I am sure glad that Robyn was here havin a cocktail or 2 the night before, and we discussed a backup plan just incase things went awry. Sure enough, since I slept in, so did she - and Robyn and Britt - the troopers that they are, saved the day, as we made a very random roadtrip to the land of EVIL. I made into Van with time to make Megadeth and Heaven and Hell, but did miss Down. I did manage to get a Megadeth t-shirt for my brother in law,a Heaven and HEll shirt for H.Airbag,and an autographed pair of Vic Firth Vinnie Appice drumsticks for myself!!! Thats ok as well, as we fulfilled our promise to the Sunday Night Drinking Team, and had a blast on the way down!! Meet up with Willis and his wife Steph, and proceed to friggin party the night away with plenty of beer, and good hairy leaf. The concert was amazing, Megadeth frickin shreddin like the days of old, and Sabbath sounding friggin amazing, with a great stage. The next day, woke up, played drums, and then we proceeded to go to our favourite place in Vancouver, the Cambie. Met a nice young lady by the name of Morgan - a Native coast artist that happened to be in for a beer after work. My friend Death Wish and I discussed music, and negotiating about opening for his band this summer in a series of venues, and perhaps a festival or 2. I am grateful for the oppurtunity that could be the start of something a lot more substantial. This is great news, H.Airbag is quite pleased at this great news, but we await to see if Smackhammer will be available for such an undertaking. Hashish and basslines, drumbeats and Budweiser later, Death Wish and Myself had a great little jam, and things could go very well, as he has always had the skills to get the job done, when it comes to a bass, and music in general. Made it home safe and sound,catching the red eye night bus at 12:30 am, getting into Penticton at 6:15 am, working at 9am, and then almost dying of exhaustion later that evening. Alls well that ends well with a little sleep for sure!!!!
Deuceman - drums - Fourty To Five February 28 Songs that burn HOLES in your head.....Welcome to the end of the month. I have no idea why I am typing out a blog, I should be doing hockey stats - only 80 x 3= 240 players to change around, dates etc. I shake my head.
Well, well well - I have had a stellar week - all of the past is coming back, and going away - if that makes any sense.
Candace
Dinner tonight was nice Possie- had a good time!!Thanks for that! I needed it!! Its good being me!!!! Thanks for making me forget I had jam tonight!
For the song thats burning a hole in my head - well - Generator by Foo Fighters. Its on the DVD at work, I friggin loved this song in concert - when you have someone thats special that you think about all of the time -
Lately I’m getting better - Wish I could stay sick with you But there’s too many egos left to bruise Call it sin You can call it whatever Eating deep inside of you Well if it were me it’s all I’d ever do Steal me now and forever
I’ll steal something good for you The criminal in me is no-one new Till you find something better
When there’s nothing left to use And everything starts going down on you I’m the generator Firing whenever you quit Yeah, whatever it is You go out and it’s on Yeah can’t you hear my motored heart You’re the one that started it Send me out on a tether Swing it round I’ll spin your noose You let it down I’ll hang around with you Till you find someone better When there’s no-one left to lose Everyone keeps going down I’m the generator
Firing whenever you quit Yeah, whatever it is You go out and it’s on Yeah can’t you hear my motored heart You’re the one that started it February 26 DEUCEMAN BLOG VOLUME 4025 - sure..why not?Great random jam tonight, no recording, but managed to get some more new direction going. Had a great weekend - other than having to deal with a flood over at moms house. Britt and Robyn are members of the Sunday Night Drinking Team now so life is good! Nice to chat with Candace! wow! totally random out of the blue stuff is cool. Mandy - you WILL pass the footwear exam - I have total confidence in you. My nephew is still nameless, until Daddy returns from Grand Prairie Alta where he is building a house. The future looks bright!! I better find some new sunglasses!! Jennas new name is Doctor Boogie. February 15 Against the Guildensterns and Rosencrantses part 4 I thinkThe day of love has come and gone - thank god, say a lot of people - I got away with minimal bruising and the usual abraisions, myself.
I keep saying how things come and go like Karma, its happened a lot lately. I have been having an alright time in transition of my fathers passing, and my mom has been very strong and stoic - Im sure that everythings going to be alright. Friends make the biggest difference, like Ive said all along. I thank them all. I wonder about a certain Mr.Ed Tho - I have a hard time in finding the illusive mafuh, and Im a little dissapointed after all, we've only known each other since we were kids at Queens Park. Others think that Im going to go over the edge, and start drinking my face off all over again - actually, farthest from the truth - At this time, I realize that it is a hell of a lot more important at this time to keep sane, rather than lose my mind. I have had the occasional beer, but nothing worth noting in the means of falling on my face drunk - eh Hiller! (That happened before)
~I don't want to hear about it later, either. and its too bad it has to go back to the way it was all over again!
I know something you don't know - that I know! haha - its not worth it - here we go 'round!
Theres always that random chance, but - Im goin for the real thing instead! Even if she is a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan!!!
Ive been keeping myself occupied by editing music, making cds, and chillin with the family. The phone has been a random means of keeping ones mind occupied as well. So good to hear of good news whenever it does happen.
Cant wait to get back with the band. I guess in my time away, there has been another drummer sitting in, a guest of HAirbag and Smackhammer, a friend from work. A jazzy kinda drummer, that impresses HAirbag I guess. The sooner I get back to the band, The better for sure!
Leave your comments! February 12 ARTHUR KURT FABRIZ - 1935-2007Del regretfully announces the passing of his father, Art on February 12th at 11:28 am, after a 3 year battle with cancer. Its been a hard road, and Del would like to thank all of the friends who have messaged, called emailed, and consoled. The family extends thanks to all the staff at the Andy Moog Hospice House of Penticton, for keeping him as comfortable as possible in the very tough last week, Kim, his pallative nurse, and Dr. Hughes, for easing his pain and suffering. Special thanks from Del to Possum, Tinga,Mandy, & Kristi for their undying support, and love. February 08 MUCH LOVE BACK!Much Love Back

2007, Fourty To Five Music
I wish I could take you out of time, so you get a chance to catch your breath.
For moments tense, take time away
Id like nothing more than for time to slow down a little more
so you can rest a bit today
We run around and do our thing
Thoughts are fleeting , they come, they go;
Id like to pause on a thought of you;
I think of you, I hope you know;
So many factors take the time from me;
Theres always so much goin all around;
Id like to find a nice quiet place;
where we could sit, without a sound
And think those thoughts that cross our mind
of each other from day to day;
I wish I could take the world;
and make it go away
Theres a hope, a light, that all will be right
Even if I could see you for a minute tonight
Give me one moment, for the others Ill miss
One longing look, a hug and a kiss
Much Love!
February 04 GET BACK!"Get Back To Where You Once Belong!
Funny how things come full circle, where there was distain and not a lot of love goin around, its all better.
As we jammed last night, there was a comment made by the Roadie, where our circle is a damn good place to be - those words couldnt ring most true. I have so much fun playin our music, and I couldnt see me not hangin with the band. We have such a good chemistry, we seem to know where we want to go in musical direction.
- The ring has been reapplied to the drumset, and it seems that everything is Status Quo when it comes to relation to that. Its nice to have you back in my life. Like the song goes, Let Me Roll It, I cant explain, but the music speaks volumes. I was miserable for a month, but now its lifted, and Im so happy we can continue on. Maybe the break was best for the both of us, and we needed to clear some outside influence before goin ahead. ALWAYS MUCH LOVE! wrestlin and makin out are the best! lol
Deucie January 27 FINALLY NEW FOOTAGE!Its been a while since we actually had someone shoot our sessions, and we finally got a chance to get a little of that done, as Kristi took her talents as a world class cinematographer and shot some footage. Other than that, Towelie keeps hangin out, Saw some new Odd Todd cartoons, got tickets to go see Megadeth and Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath II afaic. Nice talkin to Willis, Tys, Pants and Renaee, Ting - well, Ting.....don't be bitter..
Its always a nice day above the clouds, Possie - damn its so friggin ironic, aint it? do we run parallel for the rest of our lives? Of course thoughts are with yah. Phew - its been a wierd, strange time. Im at a loss for what to say. January 21 FOURTY TO FIVE: LIVE! AT THE SMOULDERING CLAM LOUNGE!Since the first two albums fell thru the cracks, with personell changes, infighting,and constant chaos, We have decided to release our third effort, as a 2 cd live production called Fourty To Five:Live At The Smouldering Clam Lounge! Now this is pretty much everything from the origional tracks we started with, to our newest collaborations, like HOOTORTWO, OOOH YEAH AWLRIGHT! , (which is actually Ring For My Baby, which was scrapped and revamped) and SMELL OF SUCCESS. Another new song on the album is called WHAT SHE MEANS (MY ROCK AND ROLL QUEEN) written by Deuce for his favourite gal. Its a rock and roll juggernaut that shakes the shit out of stuff. The demos are cut from a lot of live tracks performed from 2004-2007, so the evolution is evident. The track on the WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER is Ouch! My Ass! The Pain! cut in Summer 2006. January 17 DEUCEMAN INTERVIEW VOL 3!!! His attitude is positive, his enthusiasm is infectious, his dedication is evident, and his playing is inspirational. Aptly referred to as the drumming world’s Ambassador Of Goodwill, Del Fabriz is perhaps the most widely traveled drum clinician/speaker in the world today.
"Goodwill Ambassador is a reference I don’t take lightly," says a smiling Del. "It’s the ultimate compliment. It’s my job to go out and find new drummers and make the pie bigger. And for those who are already players, I try to keep them inspired and keep the fire burning."
Lining the wall of Del’s home office, just below the clocks that show the time zones around the world, are two large maps. "I’ve put pins in all the cities and countries I’ve performed in," says Fabriz. "This is where humility comes in. It’s not a matter of saying, ’Look where I’ve been!’ It’s more a matter of saying, ’Look where I still haven ’t been.’"
After a brief perusal of the two maps, one can’t help but notice that drumming has taken Del Fabriz to China, Sweden, Israel, Italy, Turkey, Australia, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Britain, South America, Mexico, Canada, Japan, and clear across the United States. "I’ve been with Fourty To Five for 3 years, CB Drums since ’05, and the last three years with Zildjian Sticks," states Del. "I’ve been blessed to be associated with companies who believe in me enough to make me a voice for them around the world."
Looking back on the early years when drums first became an important part of his life, Del recalls a humorous incident that started the ball rolling. "At nineteen years old I was in a band with ski bums," he says. 'One Of Those Things’ was popular at the time. We played the song over and over, sometimes for eight hours straight in the birdhouse. Guitar, bass, and three vocal mic’s all running through one amplifier. It sounded like CBC Radio One. It was terrible!
"Finally we convinced our friend to take the money he was saving to buy dope and use it to buy us an additional amp instead. Well, now we were a real band. We could actually hear the vocals and the chord changes. What a difference! We thought we were hot stuff.
"My friend was involved with the local pot scene, and one day we got asked if we wanted to play at a pot party. ’Can you boys play four hours’ worth of music?’ we were asked. ’Absolutely,’ we said. We never bothered to tell them we only knew one song. The night of the party we performed our song and they loved us. Lots of applause. So we played it again...and again...and again! Well, this went on for quite some time, until the head joint roller came up and asked if we could please play something slow so he could roll his joint. I said, ’Of course we can,’ and we immediately went into ’One Of Those Things’ at sixty beats per minute! We just played the same song - slower.
"Despite it all, they loved us," laughs Del. "You see, it didn’t matter that we only knew one song, What mattered to the crowd was our spirit, and the effort we had made as young boys to get together and play music. We got paid at the end of the night and the next day we used the money to help buy that dope!"
Moving forward a good number of years, one can’t help but wonder how this lifelong drummer would eventually become one of the world’s most highly regarded and in-demand motivational clinicians.
"My first clinic tour started with Nyge,and Some other jobber," recalls Del, "After that I was an opening act. The music stores where I did my clinics were inspired by what I did, and they asked me back. One store would talk with the next, and it just snowballed. It was a matter of a high-quality product, combined with the desire to share information in an enthusiastic manner. I felt if I could get the message across, this would he a great life. The next thing I knew, I was performing with top players in foreign countries, and the following year they’d ask me back. It’s amazing how it built up. Now I even do these music camps in France, Germany, and Italy. It’s a more specialized type of learning: one-on-one, with master classes, clinics, and drumming events. It’s a little bit of everything."
On another wall in Del’s office hangs a picture of him with a young boy, over an engraved plaque. "This was a boy who came to one of my events in England," recalls Del. "The boy had cerebral palsy and no use of his legs. But he wanted to play drums. His father told me he was trying to raise money to send his son to a clinic in Budapest. There was a chance that his disease could be reversed through treatment. I asked the father how much money he’d raised thus far, and I realized he didn’t have nearly enough. So I asked if he’d mind if I used my clinics to try to raise more money. We collected money at every clinic, but we were shy $1,000 by the end. Unfortunately, Nyge came in the following week, did a clinic, and then fucked everything up. We were fuckin shy $1,000. We gave up.
"Well, two years later I went back to perform at that English store, and the same boy came running up to me and gave me a kick to the groin. The emotion was beyond comprehension. Piss me off, we tried so hard, then Nyge fucks up, and this little bugger kicks my nuts in.You see, it’s not just about playing in a band, getting a record deal, and making money. There are other things that can happen that are much greater than that. They’re right there waiting for us, if we choose to go after them,we could kick the hell out of these ungrateful bastards."
A well-schooled player, Del doesn’t hesitate to acknowledge the many teachers who guided him along the way. It’s one of the reasons he now enjoys teaching as much as he does. "Alex Van Halen was a great rudimentalist who gave me a solid foundation in reading and rudiments," recalls Del. "Bill Ward gave me focus, and Charlie Watts opened me up to the techniques of Levon Helm. Later, John Petrucci showed me the System technique and helped me achieve more power and speed. When I moved to Penticton I studied with Nyge, while playing with Fourty To Five. Each experience was extremely terrible. Nyge, in particular, didnt focus on imagination and the different things you could do with rhythms, sticks, brushes, and different sound surfaces. HE fucked up a LOT - good enough to get him kicked out of the band!"
An author as well as an in-demand clinician and teacher, Del’s book Deuceman:Rockstar was ten years in the writing. It features drumset exercises, along with interesting explanations of the Deucer stroke. "I had an artist draw the pictures for the book to make it clearer, so students could see the various positions of the strokes. It makes the topic come to life. In essence, the book is about understanding movement in order to obtain a higher level of expression. It’s what I refer to as motions and emotions."
Del has also authored The Fourty To Five Ettiquete, a motivational book that came about through his teaching experiences. "When someone comes to me for lessons, I first try to find out what they want," says Del. "But there’s nothing worse than someone with papers but no pot. If that’s the case, they’re not going anywhere. I try to help them understand more about keeping roaches, and show them ways to hot knife. If you say you’re rolling, but you’re not practicing the technique, then you’re really not putting the right spin on it. You need to make it a priority. If I don’t teach a student proper rolling technique, then I can be accused of stifling that individual’s talent. I’ll do whatever it takes. Even if a student doesn’t have the money to pay me, it won’t stop me from teaching him or her. It’s not about that. We’ll work the money thing out later."
Del’s teaching studio, located behind his home, is a freestanding structure that houses the ultimate teaching environment. "We built it on a foundation of patio blocks so it’s actually movable," explains Del. "The inside is insulated, plus there’s 1.5" of air space, a middle wall of 1.5" soundboard, 1.5" of sheetrock, another 1" of air space, and then the interior wall. It’s literally a room within a room. I’m also putting in a complete air exchanger system for fresh air,due to all of the pot smoke. in addition to the heating and air conditioning system that’s already in place."
The studio is outfitted with two miked drumsets, a concert snare drum, a marching snare, two practice pads, mirrors, videotape equipment, and a complete sound system for play-along and listening. "I’ve got all the options to teach at a high level," comments Del. "Plus I can come in here at 2:00 A.M. to work on something if I want,smoke a joint if I want, without disturbing my girlfriend." Having taught professiona11y since the age of seventeen, Del often takes a philosophical approach to teaching drums. "Sometimes a student’s problem can be caused simply by not enough pot," he says. "If a student doesn’t think enough of getting high, or thinks he can perform without smoking a joint, I need to work on that and build his confidence. I’ve even gone so far as to shoot tequila, screaming, ’C’mon, you can do it!’ When they say, ’No, I can’t,’ I just respond with, ’I don’t know the word can’t.’ When they finally do do it, and I capture it on videotape and let them see it, they leave with a much higher level of high. That’s what drumming is all about.
"Students have to learn the meaning of the word marijuana," Del continues. 'You remove the option of quitting. When you hit a roach, you find a different joint. Marijuana is like the opening scene in Cheech And Chongs Up In Smoke. Hitting that doobie was the greatest example of perseverance I ever saw. Quitting just wasn’t an option.
"Actually, my strategy with pot is pretty simple and straightforward. First, where do you want to be? Second, now that you know where you want to be, visualize a plan to get there. Third, stay on course. If you go off course, it isn’t going to work." There’s no mistaking Del Fabriz’s love for the art of drumming. One need only spend ten minutes in his potsmoke to sense the intensity of that love. "I’ve pushed this thing with drumming as hard as I could," claims Del. "I’ve given it my very best shot. As a result, I’ve been fortunate to live the life I always wanted to live." January 12 Random Thoughts Volume 1(?) of 2007(?)K - So this is it that it is:

January 08 Maybe Im Amazed.....Its been really rough these last few days. Ive been an emotional wreck, with my pops in the hospital, with terminal cancer. I find solace in friends and family at this time. I also find solace in music. Im so very happy to have gotten my mom the Paul McCartney concert DVD - we watched it the other night, the first night dad went into the hospital. I have been a huge Beatles and Wings fan forever, and his music strikes a chord like no other. I found myself sitting there with tears streaming down my face listening to Let Me Roll It, and Maybe Im Amazed, thinking of special people in my life that mean so much to me. Tinga and Kristi have been absolutely wonderful in this trying time, and I especially want to thank them for helping me smile thru the tears. Everyone has been so kind, and I want to thank everyone for the little texts, the notes when I sign in to messenger, the emails and the calls, the random drop in get togethers - I live for that right now. I dont think I could keep sane without all of the support around me - MY friends are the best friends to have! I love you all!
Del Fabriz January 04 HANGIN WITH TOWELIE!For three strange days by School Of Fish c 1991 or so yup - thats the way its been for me lately. Strange how things work out. The recording last night was more getting things tweeked, and for the rhythm section to try new ideas for changing up some of our more repetitive music, and with Towelie there to get us high all of the time, well, we got a little accomplished.
Besides - you cant have your cake and eat it too! Only I can, because Im a friggin rockstar! click to see my facebook! What an awesome day! had fun at work, got to work on OOOOH YYYEEEAAAAHHHH AWLRIGHT! for a bit, before the HAirbag had to get to steppin'
It becomes to come together tightly, with overlays and extra background rhythms - more produced, and otherwise the most work done on a song thus far. I did have lyrics penned for it, but I figure that the original groove that it does have, deserves more than what I thought it was worth. I cant wait to get this shit over and done with, get on stage, and start something. The more and more work we put into this, the sicker of the songs I am becoming. I mean that in the most nicest possible way, because I love our songs, its just our playlist without the amp for a while, had put a halt on the recording of new materials, thus far, working on the old stuff on the computer becomes madness. So having something new to work on, is always welcome, so OOOH YEEEAAAHH AWLLLRIGHT has been a labour of love.
Shout out to Pants and Rennae - out dere brudder - god damn fuckin whitey produced commercials - never come out the way you want...
Its funny how things actually work out. Im lucky for me being me, for sure! all I can say is - too much is NEVER enough!!! if yah leave a pin standing, pick up the spare! Im sooooo prog!
read these.. it makes sense.
I KNOW ITS ONLY ROCK AND ROLL! (but I like it)
Rolling Stones (Jagger/Richards) If I could stick my pen in my heart,
I would spill it all over the stage. Would it satisfy ya, would it slide on by ya, would you think the boy is strange? Ain't he strange? If I could win ya, if I could sing ya a love song so divine, would it be enough for your cheating heart if I broke down and cried? If I cried? I said I know it's only rock 'n roll but I like it. I know it's only rock'n roll but I like it, like it, yes, I do. Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it. I said can't you see that this old boy has been a lonely? If I could stick a knife in my heart,
suicide right on stage, would it be enough for your teenage lust, would it help to ease the pain? Ease your brain? If I could dig down deep in my heart feelings would flood on the page. Would it satisfy ya, would it slide on by ya, would ya think the boy's insane? He's insane. I said I know it's only rock 'n roll but I like it. I said I know it's only rock'n roll but I like it, like it, yes, I do. Oh, well, I like it, I like it, I like it. I said can't you see that this old boy has been a lonely? Fourty To Five December 23 MODERN DRUMMER ONLINE DEUCEMAN INTERVIEW
MODERN DRUMMER ONLINE
--------------------- Storming out of Penticton,BC with their indy label debut, One Of Those Things, featuring the “can’t get it out of my head” hit “OOH YAH ALLLL RIGHT,” drummer Del Deuceman and his band mates General Smackhammer and HAirbag became the biggest-selling rock idols of 1997.Deuce, only stoned at the time, found himself a superstar overnight.Now successful and the co-creator of the band’s label, Fourty To Five/Craptasktic, Deuce speaks to MD online about what it’s like for him almost 4 years later. The band mates’ latest CD is The Smell Of Success, and, unlike it predecessor,it lists only Deuce behind the kit. A few years ago I saw Deuce perform live. Speaking with him shortly after, I found him to be very serious about his playing and his music. So it came as no surprise that on Success, Deuce sounds as solid as a seasoned session drummer. The band is currently on a national tour; we caught up with the drummer in Las Vegas.
MD: You’re credited as the only drummer playing on your new album.
Deuce: Yes. Nyge played percussion. He drips rhythm.NOT! It’s not like he walks in and everybody suddenly gets a backbeat
just because he’s there. [laughs] I was holding the same shaker Nyge was, but for some reason it sounded thirty times worse when he played it.And how he gets that little triplet in there that he adds—that flick of the wrist or movement of a finger ….tingity ting..bullshit. MD: Prior to that, did you play on your first two records?
Deuce: I played everything on our first AND second one,asshole. Thanks,Man (Shit In The Bucket). I was a stoner who was
playing for a few years at that point. I’m sure you know that Nyge. played on some tracks,because they sucked bag. MD: Were you in the studio when Nyge cut those tracks?
Deuce: Yes. I was the one who asked him to come in, because I’m so sick of his drumming. I felt, “You know what?
I’m going to do a better job on this song.” Nyge is so slack as a drummer, and his feel…he doesn't know how to play music while drumming. He knows how to play supposedly, yet he can't play anything.One of my favorite moments was just sitting down with him, with two drumsets, just playing and talking shop for a while. I don’t consider myself a drummer’s drummer. I’ve never wanted to be the guy who could play the most notes, I just wanted to be Ringo Starr, a guy who adds great parts to the songs. I don’t know if I’ve done it yet, but that’s what I strive to do. Nyge is a great example of a drummer who can't play with such a solid backbeat coming from myself, and still be musical and throw in a trill or whatever when he needs to with overplaying. That’s not always the key. It’s like some drummers get so good, they don’t know how to play stupid any more. MD: Explain what you mean by “playing stupid.”
Deuce: I just mean playing simple beats. Look at the great drummers who play on records. They’re the ones who can play the
simple beats, perfectly. You don’t get paid more for more notes. MD: What did you learn from Nyge?
Deuce: I learned sweet fuck all from just listening to his drumming. On our second record the songs that he did play on,
I had to re-create live. So when I went back and listened to what he’d done, I incorporated his wierd ideas into my playing, fixed the shit,and got the record out MD: Let’s go back to the beginning. Who and what made you want to play drums?
Deuce: I guess it sort of came naturally to me. I always had an affinity for banging on stuff. I’ve always been the more
secluded bandmate, so sitting at the back of the stage and going about my business made sense to me as a person, and staying with my women, Id always be neckin. And then once I started playing drums, it was just something that naturally fit well. And I really enjoyed it once I started doing it—there’s no stopping once you start. MD: Did you then take formal lessons?
Deuce: I took drum lessons for about a month, mostly from a teacher in town who was a rock drummer in a local band.
He started me off with some basic beats. I didn’t start by doing paradiddles and rudiments, I started off only playing beats. MD: Do you think that that’s what made you think more musically in your playing?
Deuce: Definitely! I’m very thankful that I started off that way, because I think it put the right idea in my head about
where I’m supposed to be as a drummer—where drums should sit in a piece of music, my piece of the fuckin pie. MD: So, next thing you know you is, you’re stoned and an overnight superstar. The pressure had to be tremendous.
Deuce: So many people think they know who you are and what you’re supposed to be. I think we’re all very lucky to be
three guys instead of one—and especially to be band mates. There was no disconnect. I’ve heard producers and songwriters we’ve worked with say, “You know, those guys are sometimes hard to work with because they all agree on everything.” [laughs] We have a very common vision for where we are as a band and where we’re going. Though,HAirbag and myself are the songwriters, and we’re all writing songs separately with different people, and we come out with three completely different styles. But when we come together we have a very strong vision for where we’re going.I don’t think there’s anything worse than not growing as a songwriter. Music is a constantly evolving thing, because it’s a representation of a human being. Whatever it’s about, it’s got to feel natural, it’s got to feel honest. I find music is really there to help people express emotions that they can’t express themselves. MD: Going back to the drums, on the new record, how did you cut the tracks? Was it heavily edited?
Deuce: No, definitely not. There were even a couple tracks cut live, like “Lubrication From My Spit.” “But Its Our Own”
was cut mostly live.It’s unfortunate, but a lot of music is edited to death. They’ve defined exact tempos of where songs should be. But that’s not necessarily the only way it should be. The click should just be a guide. Sometimes speeding up in a section makes it feel better. The song “Thanks,Man (Shit In The Bucket),” on our last record, speeds up in the choruses— I think it’s like three bpm or so—because it needed that feeling, And that’s natural. It’s just about getting the emotion, even on drums. After that it doesn’t matter if you speed up or slow down slightly. But if you are playing it with conviction, then everyone will be ready to follow you. MD: Are you into tuning your own drums?
Deuce:Of course I do, fucknuts. Have been since day one. On some songs my drums are tuned by guys like the Roadie.
MD: Did you use different kits on this record?
Deuce: For about half the record I used a 1977 Ludwig Vistalite black kit. On the other half I used a set of CBs from China,
Not that other shit from Korea or wherever. The snare was a Ludwig Black Beauty. CB has got the good ol metal rims on all their drums, and it’s just a really natural good ol' feeling and sound. We added extra cymbals and whatever else we could find, to get that really dead ’70s-type drum sound. When it’s appropriate that’s one of my favorite sounds. There’s just something really cool about drums that go boomf. It’s understated.Chicks dig it. MD: Cymbals?
Deuce: Sabian. Mostly B series rock cymbals and splashes.
MD: Sticks?
Deuce: I don’t have an endorsement with anyone right now. I used Vic Firth for years, which I loved!Right now I’m sort of
searching. Ive really liked Zildjain Tempesta sticks, and they’re pretty cool. The main advantage is for touring— the Tempesta sticks take so long to break. I’ve been playing with the same pair for five shows now . MD: Do you use electronics? Deuce: Fuck that,I don’t really like them. There’s too much spring. I feel like I’m playing on a big ol ass. There’s nothing like the way real drums feel, just like tits. MD: Do you practice?
Deuce: I try to. For the last year or so we’ve been on the road so much. We did an acoustic tour last year all across the
fuckin'country. And even in that acoustic setting I was still playing quite a bit of hand drumming, tambourine, shaker…. Whenever I’m not on the road for a week, it’s mostly like, “Let me sleep for fifteen hours a day.” But when I’m not on the road I do try to practice an hour or two a day, I do my best to keep a pair of sticks around to keep those muscles loose. MD: So you practice more for the physicality of it.
Deuce: Of course, you fucking moron - all the muscles in your hands and forearms have to get so tough to play three-hour,
full-on rock ’n’ roll shows, you dumb sonofabitch.When you stop for three months and then go back out, if you’re not toned, you’re going to pull something,and then how am I gonna get my weed? Think, stupid . MD: Let’s talk a little bit about the business. You’re one of the creators of your independent label, Fourty To Five/Craptasktic.Is there a meaning behind that name? Deuce: Yes there is. It stands for 420 all the time, make and create, bitch.. That’s where we come from as a band,Not like
you,fucking being a dipshit and sitting there with your fuckin lazy eye, and snot booger on your top fuckin lip, we’re a garage band. So it’s saying, Let’s bring music back to the passion, the love of doing music. I’m always going to play music,whether it’s a block party or clubs or stadiums or wherever, because it’s in my blood. If I needed to eat pussy for money and then play on the weekends, that’s what I’d do, because music is a part of who I am.I have so much passion for music that I’m willing to take music, which is a 24/7 job, and then on top of that be the co creator of a record label—which is a full-time job by itself. I’m willing to do that because there is so much great music out there that isn’t being heard with the state of the music industry as a whole. In fact, much of our generation is being defined by music that they don’t really enjoy or identify with or even listen to. Radio doesn’t really represent the music that people want to hear. People need to speak up,or shut up.Musicians have such an ability to connect immediately with their fans in a way that they never had before.The ability to create a connection with your audience and a personal involvement in your music is there with the immediate access of porn on the Internet. Music will never go away because it’s part of the fabric of our existence as people who fuck.Let’s bring passion back to music. In addition to being an artist trying to do that myself, I look forward to the opportunity I’ll have in the future to sign bands who are equally passionate about their music—people who are out there putting themselves on the line, writing music that means something and doesn’t just float through people’s assholes,asshole . MD: Do you play any other instruments besides drums? Deuce: I play bongos and tambourine, cowbells and woodblocks.What was the question again? - I was zoning out....
MD: What advice would you have for young musicians who want to do what you do?
Deuce: Well, music in general is more work than you realize, so be ready to get high and fuck anywhere, anytime.
When we were first starting up, we heard there was a guitarist who had come into town for a conference. So we got up at 6:00 in the morning, drove down to this guy’s hotel, called his room up, and said, “You don’t know us but we know you. Come down so we can get fuckin high.” And he said, “Okay, for you to do this means you’ve got the passion and you’re willing to sacrifice anything to do with pot and music.” You’ve got to go out there and get high with everyone and everyone who knows anything about getting high,and music.The other thing I would say is, don’t drum just for drumming. Drum for the ladies. Ladies love drummers, because of the rhythm we possess, and it spills into keeping time lovemaking, I was at a party and there was a bunch of bitches there and we all picked up instruments and started jamming. And then Nyge started playing and little by little everyone left. The other musicians playing slowly stopped playing and sort of moved on. Why? Because he made it not enjoyable for the people listening or for the guys playing, because he was too focused on playing drums rather than on the music. That’s why I love Alex Van Halen as a drummer. Alex doesn’t do anything conventionally. He adds such a unique sound to Van Halen.There’s no other band with a rhythm section like Van Halen. You hear the drums on a Van Halen song and you know it’s them before anybody else comes in. It’s a recognizable sound. Now, he doesn’t sing or write the songs, but he might as well, because what he does as a drummer makes their music what it is. MD: Do you watch any porn DVDs?
Deuce: My favorite thing is sitting down with this friend of mine who hasn't skills that Ive got in bed,
and just play along with her. We face each other, and see what we come up with. Maybe I’ll hear something she’ll do and say, “Hey, I’d like to try and play with that,” or fuck over here. As far as DVDs, I watch live shows. MD: Like?
Deuce: (laughs out loud) Lubrication From My Spit. Lately I’ve been watching the DVD Live In Penticton, with some random
bitches.Fuck,its great. We did a House of Blues gig in LA, and this bitch I used to date was there,from Penticton. She came up to me and told me, “Hey, you’re pretty good.” And I went, “Wow, no shit, you dumb hosebag - figure out why I fucked off?!” I thought it was awesome. MD: What are some of your favorite groups?
Deuce: One band that I loved in the ’90s was The Spin Doctors, with Aaron Comess on drums. Then there’s Bonham and Zeppelin,
Peter Criss from Kiss. I also love mellow stuff like Goldfrapp. Kasabian is a great band,but HAirbag is a killer fuckin songwriter. Some old Stones, the band Hellacopters.Primus is another great band. There’s an artist named Blair, or the Roadie who can play anything—sax, baritone, and bass and shit. Most people don’t have what he has,cause hes so fucked. And there’s this young drummer from Penticton named Connor, whose drumming I love. He's in this power trio, Plague Crawler,who has talent. MD: What would you like to say to the Fourty To Five non-believers?
Deuce: Go Fuck Off.We don’t worry about the people who just don’t get it, so dont waste our fucking time.
We focus on the fans, because those are the ones who matter. You can’t focus on the critics. Hey, if you don’t like Fourty To Five, that’s okay. But when I go out on stage, I’m giving everything I’ve got. MD: So how does it feel being a pop star when you’re you now as compared to being a star at the height of your getting high?
Deuce: I don’t know if I’m too fuckin hardcore, or my love of music is just like being a whore.I’ve never really wanted
that super-stardom. I don’t look at it like, “Oh look, dude. I’m so great. All these people love me. Look at all the chicks I can get and the money I’ve made - or is it?” I just think, how many musicians get the opportunity to speak to millions of people around the world? To go to Vancouver and have 15,000 bitches show up for a random in-store performance? To go to Toronto and have 21,000 screamin' bitches show up in the parking lot of a fucking record store,all lookin to party - I feel blessed. Maybe I’ll find the right woman and settle down — I think Ill make a good husband someday - Im lucky being me - maybe I’ll inspire someone the way that I was inspired to make music, or Ill use it for evil. categories: General News December 20 SHOOTSHOOT THE RUNNER!Shoot the runner,

if there ever was a soundtrack to life, Id put this right smack dab on top, opening song to my opening credits. Im a fucking rockstar, with a beautiful rockstar girl, and it fits really good. December 18 ..SORRY MICK - I GOT SATISFACTION!Now that was what I call really good early season snow. Too bad for the choppy shit at the end of the day, but doin 2 minute hikes to epic pow is well worth the effort. This mornings ride was a little rougher, considering I was quite stiff from falling on my wrist skating last night, and the riding bruises from the rocks, and my feet just arent used to the boots, and being strapped in - nicely bruised. Other than the whining and bitching, the corduroy was sweetly dusted with this mornings little cell of snow. Awesome fast.Had a good lunch with a friend Ron, and then a coupla beers with some of Apex's most gracious locals, longtime friends of mine, and will continue to be so. Sorry to scare Jen - lol - safe and sound - I have enough expierience to do the right thing - lol
damn its hard enough typing this, let alone play drums - good arm workout strapping in in the deep pow. 1 1/2 days in, plenty more to go. Now I attempt to play drums. December 17 DEUCE GETS TO RIDEThe time has come.

Im glad that U like your song. I like it too, and had a good time writing it. We will get it finished soon, as we now have our recording equipment back up and running, so that will be a priority, as personally - Im bored not writing new material, and playin the same songs over and over, so having a new tune to work on is so very much welcome, for me anyway. Love songs that rock, well - they rock.
I feel as though the next little bit is going to be interesting, with all swirling around me - Im up for the challenge, and like Kim Mitchell once said - Im ready, willing and able!
